APRA has proposed stronger requirements for how superannuation trustees oversee investments offered to members. The package, released on 30 September, addresses investment limits, conflicts of interest and the resources needed to supervise complex investment menus.
Submissions are due on 3 February 2027. APRA expects to finalise standards in the first half of 2027, with a proposed commencement of 1 January 2028 subject to consultation. Those dates describe a proposal, not a set of new rules already fully operating.
A large investment menu needs oversight
The regulator says the changes would apply to all trustees, with the greatest expected impact on platform trustees. The issue is not merely how many choices a member can see. It is how those options are assessed, monitored and acted on when risks emerge.

For a member reading about the proposal, useful questions concern who is responsible for the option, how concentration is managed and where the product's risks and fees are disclosed. A familiar platform name should not be treated as a guarantee that every underlying investment is low risk.
Keep governance separate from performance rankings
A performance comparison and a governance proposal examine different things. A past return does not establish how effectively conflicts are controlled or whether an option suits an individual member. Equally, a proposed improvement to oversight does not predict future returns.
Members considering a change should read the actual product information and seek appropriately qualified advice where needed. This report does not recommend a fund, an investment switch or withdrawing from a product.
The news is the consultation and the responsibilities APRA wants to strengthen. The next milestones are submissions, the final standards and implementation guidance. Until those arrive, claims that the proposal has already fixed every weakness or guarantees retirement savings would go beyond the evidence.
