What are people in Nepal looking up while considering overseas study? A Google Trends comparison checked on 9 October puts English tests ahead of the two Australia-specific study phrases we selected. It gives AusLume a useful starting point for reporting, although it cannot identify who is searching or where they intend to enrol.
What we compared
We compared the English search terms study in australia, australia student visa, ielts, pte and scholarships. The settings were Nepal, past 12 months, all categories and Web Search. The visible weekly chart ran from 5 October 2025 to 4 October 2026.
Within that single comparison, the displayed average indices were 3, 3, 56, 36 and 5 respectively. These are relative-interest indices. They are not percentages of Nepal's population, search totals, exam bookings or student applications.
Google explains that Trends uses sampled, aggregated searches and normalises the figures to a scale from zero to 100. We selected five English phrases; a different selection, spelling, language or time window may produce a different picture.
English tests are a useful reporting priority
The comparison supports producing helpful English-test explainers for this audience. It does not establish that IELTS is the preferred test of every Nepalese applicant, or that all PTE searches concern Australia. People may be investigating other destinations, professional registration or a requirement unrelated to overseas study.
A practical article should help a reader check the test accepted for their intended purpose. Course entry, a scholarship and a visa application may each require a separate check. The higher index cannot choose a test for an individual reader.
Useful questions include which version of the test is accepted, how long a result remains usable for the intended application and what preparation the reader needs. We have not compared test-provider prices or claimed that one exam is easier. Those would require a separate, dated source check.
Scholarship interest deserves a careful update
In the related rising queries for scholarships, the interface showed australia awards scholarship up 200 per cent for the selected comparison. That is a search-interest signal, not a count of scholarships available to Nepali applicants.
At the time of our check, the Australia Awards Nepal website said applications were closed and would reopen in early 2027. A story saying applications are open now would therefore be wrong. Readers can follow the official site for the next announcement.
Someone planning ahead can review the published programme information, note the eligibility questions they need answered and assemble a list of documents to check when the next round is announced. Exact opening dates and rules should come from that round's official notice.
Searches for Home Affairs point to another useful explainer
Among rising queries related to australia student visa, department of home affairs australia appeared with a 400 per cent increase. That suggests an editorial opportunity to explain how to find official visa information and read dated announcements.
It does not prove why the searches rose or whether a policy change caused them. We did not interview searchers, analyse individual users or compare the results with visa lodgement records. A story about application outcomes would need different evidence.
The useful follow-up is straightforward: show where applicants can check current requirements, explain the difference between an announcement and an operative rule, and warn against treating a provider offer as a guaranteed visa result.
What is missing from this snapshot
Nepali-language and Romanised Nepali queries were not included. The location setting describes where searches occurred, not the nationality of the person typing them. The latest weekly point may also cover an incomplete week, so we have not described it as a measured weekly surge.
This is a dated editorial snapshot, not a national survey or a ranking of every topic searched in Nepal. It gives us questions to report next. The official requirements still need checking before a reader books a test, pays a deposit or submits an application.
