Before a family in Nepal pays a deposit for study in Australia, everyone contributing money should understand what the payment buys and what still needs to happen. An offer, a place on a course and a visa decision are separate steps.
Our Google Trends check on 9 October found sustained interest in English tests in Nepal. Within one past-year comparison of five English search terms, IELTS and PTE had higher average relative interest than study in australia or australia student visa. English tests serve several purposes and destinations, so those searches cannot all be counted as plans to study in Australia.
Choose a course you can explain
Begin with the work or further study you want the qualification to support. Then look at the course content and entry requirements. Ask the provider about anything that is unclear, including where the course is taught and which practical requirements apply.
Study Australia provides a course-search tool and explains that academic and English entry requirements differ by course. Confirm the requirements with the provider before booking a test or paying an application fee.
If two courses sound similar, compare their subjects and assessment requirements. Write down why you prefer one. That is useful for your own decision even before any visa application: a course is a large commitment of money and time.
Price the first year and the first month
Ask for the tuition payment schedule, not only the headline annual fee. Check which other costs apply to the course and when they become due. Add health cover, travel and housing to a separate living-cost plan.
The official living-cost guide says actual expenses can be higher than the visa financial minimum. Treat the minimum and the household budget as different figures. Its calculator's published update date is November 2023, so refresh your estimate with current prices.
For money coming from Nepal, note the currency of every bill and check the exchange rate and transfer charges when payment is due. Keep a record of who is contributing and when the funds are expected. If one payment depends on selling an asset or borrowing, discuss that dependency before committing to a deadline.
Make a version of the plan that does not rely on immediate Australian earnings. If it cannot meet essential early payments, ask whether the timing or the course choice needs to change. A job you hope to find is not money already available.
Read the payment and refund terms
Before accepting an offer, ask which payments are refundable, under what circumstances and through which process. Check the terms applying to a delayed arrival or unsuccessful visa application. Keep the provider's answer alongside the agreement, rather than relying on a verbal assurance.
If using an education agent, verify that the provider supports that agent. Study Australia advises applicants to understand charges and obtain receipts. It also states that education agents cannot guarantee a permanent visa or a job after graduation.
Ask who receives the payment and verify the details independently if bank instructions change. Keep copies of receipts and the documents you agreed to. These are practical recordkeeping suggestions; the actual agreement determines the refund process.
Check visa requirements separately
Use Home Affairs' Student visa page for the current requirements and application instructions. Check dates on material shared through messages or social media. A summary written for an earlier intake may no longer describe the rules applying to you.
The Genuine Student requirement concerns your actual circumstances and study intentions. Use truthful information that you can support. A generic statement copied from another applicant cannot explain your own education history or reasons for choosing a course.
This article does not give a required bank balance, English score or approval probability. Those need a current check against the applicable requirements. For individual migration advice, consult a registered migration agent or a suitably qualified Australian legal practitioner.
