A new passport number is easy to overlook once the document has arrived. If you hold an Australian visa or have an application in progress, the immigration record needs attention too.
Home Affairs asks people to tell it when they receive a new passport so the document can be linked to their existing visa or visa or citizenship application. Its published quickest route is updating passport details in ImmiAccount. [1]
This is an administrative explainer. It does not assess your visa validity or give individual migration advice.
Start with the applicant's own record
The department's instructions direct users to select the application in ImmiAccount, open its details, choose the update option and then change passport details for the relevant applicant. Enter the new information and the reason for the change before submitting. [1]
In a family application, slow down at the applicant selection. An adult arranging everyone's paperwork can easily focus on the new document and overlook whose record is open.
Before entering anything, compare the new passport with the existing record. Read the number, name and dates directly from the document. Keep a private note of what you submitted and any confirmation the system provides. Do not put passport photographs or visa reference numbers in a public discussion to ask for help.
Some changes need a different route
Home Affairs lists the passport details that can be updated in ImmiAccount, including the number, name, country, issue and expiry dates, issuing authority and place. Changes to sex, gender or date of birth require the department's New Passport Details web form. [2]
That is why following an old screenshot can be frustrating. The route depends on the field being changed, not simply on having a new passport.
If you cannot locate your application or the relevant update option, consult the department's current instructions rather than submit a fresh visa application just to change a document number. Form 929 is another official resource for contact or passport-detail changes; use the instructions applicable to your circumstances. [3]
The ETA exception is worth checking
The passport-update page explicitly excludes Electronic Travel Authority subclass 601 holders. It says a new passport requires an application for a new ETA using that passport; the existing ETA cannot be transferred. [1]
Do not assume that an ImmiAccount update covers every visa product. Equally, do not apply this ETA rule to a different visa without checking its requirements.
A hypothetical traveller renewing a passport a week before a flight should check the correct process immediately. The article cannot promise a processing time or confirm that an update has been completed just because a form was submitted.
Keep the travel checks separate
A passport update, an airline booking name and permission to enter a transit country are different records. Review each relevant record directly with its responsible provider or authority.
Ask what evidence you need if a change has not yet appeared where you expect it. For complex cases, use Home Affairs assistance or an appropriately qualified migration professional. Avoid relying on a stranger's experience with another visa subclass.
Before closing the task, check that your email and other contact details are current too. A confirmation sent to an inbox you no longer use will not help you understand whether further information is needed. Make the administrative check part of preparing for the trip, rather than an airport problem.
