Roosters v Knights: the grand final story goes beyond picking a winner

Newcastle supporters have a turnaround to celebrate before Sunday's grand final even begins. For Roosters fans, it is another chance to add to their club's record.

The official NRL preview lists the Sydney Roosters against the Newcastle Knights at Accor Stadium on Sunday 4 October. Newcastle finished last in 2025 and reached this decider from seventh place in 2026. The NRL describes it as the Knights' first grand final since 2001 and the Roosters' first since 2019. [1]

What makes the matchup compelling

Newcastle's route to the final gives supporters plenty to enjoy. It does not settle how the team will handle Sunday's contest.

Watch how each side responds after an error. Can it get out of its own end? Does a shift in territory turn into sustained pressure? These are our viewing questions, rather than conclusions from a statistical scouting analysis.

Team selection matters too. The NRL's preview was still discussing injury and selection issues when checked on 1 October 2026. [1] A preview written midweek should not present a provisional lineup as the final side. Confirm the official match list closer to kickoff.

Make room for the NRLW decider

Accor Stadium's event page lists the NRLW grand final between the Roosters and Broncos at 4pm, followed by the men's decider at 7.30pm. These are Sydney local times, and the schedule should be rechecked before travel or broadcast planning. [2]

If you are watching at home, check both start times before arranging food or inviting friends. Friends interstate may be working from a different clock that day.

The clock changes that morning

Daylight saving starts in NSW on 4 October. Queensland does not make the same change. A 7.30pm Sydney start is therefore 6.30pm in Brisbane on that date. Check the local time displayed by your broadcaster rather than assuming “eastern time” means the same thing everywhere. [4]

This is especially easy to miss when a screenshot circulates without a timezone. Include the city or the timezone when sharing a start time with friends interstate.

Tickets and travel need the official route

When checked, the stadium page said its ticket allocation was exhausted and directed buyers to Ticketmaster Resale as the authorised resale platform. It warns that tickets from unauthorised sellers may not be valid. It also says transport is included in the ticket, subject to the event arrangements. [2]

Availability can change. Use the current stadium and ticketing pages, and check the transport conditions and service information relevant to your journey. A social-media message offering an urgent bargain should not replace those checks.
