Australia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.7 per cent in September, the ABS reported on 15 October. Employment fell by 39,300 in that measure, while the trend employment estimate increased. The trend unemployment rate remained at 4.6 per cent.

The different movements are not interchangeable descriptions of the same calculation. Seasonally adjusted estimates help remove regular seasonal patterns, while trend estimates seek to show the underlying direction with less monthly volatility. The ABS recommends caution when interpreting short-term changes.

Look beyond the headline rate

Employment, participation, underemployment and hours worked describe different aspects of the labour market. A person can have a job while wanting more hours. Someone outside the labour force is not automatically counted as unemployed. Those distinctions matter when translating a national statistic into a claim about work being available.

For a jobseeker, the national rate is background rather than a probability of securing a particular role. Industry, region, qualifications and the conditions of individual vacancies still shape the search. A statewide or national total cannot establish that a specific occupation is hiring locally.

Watch the survey notes

September's release also marks a return to the full suite of Labour Force data products after modernisation work. The ABS explains weighting and survey issues in the release. Those notes are part of interpreting the result, rather than a reason to discard the data or pretend measurement is perfect.

When comparing reports, use the same series and reference month. Mixing a trend rate with a seasonally adjusted change can make a movement look inconsistent when the calculations differ.

The useful reading is a set of indicators with uncertainty and context. It is neither proof that every employer is struggling to hire nor that every worker can find enough paid hours. The stock workplace photographs do not depict surveyed respondents or a business announcing redundancies.
